What Lightroom preset file formats exist?

Lightroom presets come in a few different file formats, each designed to work with specific versions of Lightroom. Here are the three main types: .xmp, .lrtemplate, and .dng.

.XMP Presets:

  • These work with Lightroom Classic CC (version 7.3 and later), the cloud-based Lightroom CC, and Adobe Camera Raw.

.LRTEMPLATE Presets:

  • Compatible with Lightroom versions 4, 5, 6, and Lightroom Classic CC (version 7.2 and earlier).
  • These use the older .lrtemplate format, which is tied to earlier versions of Lightroom.
  • They won’t work with newer versions of Lightroom Classic CC or the cloud-based Lightroom CC unless converted.

.DNG Presets:

  • DNG presets can be used with Lightroom Mobile (on both iOS and Android), as well as Lightroom CC (cloud-based) and Lightroom Classic CC.
  • These presets are actually DNG files, which are image files that have the preset settings saved as metadata.
